Does The Bible Condone Polygyny?

Intro

There seems to be a big mis-understanding by people when the subject of POLYGYNY is mentioned in the Bible. Polygyny is mentioned throughout the Bible so why is there such an objection of Christian women from accepting polygyny if they claim to follow God & the Bible and why can’t tney live happily in polygynous marriages. In this video I will present an in depth analysis of the biblical verses regarding polygyny so we may overstand whether or not the Bible condones polygyny so you can adjust your life accordingly.

Most of the prophets and main characters in the Bible, Abraham, David, Jacob, Moses, Solomon all had more than one wife. In fact there were 40 men in the bible who practiced polygyny.

Wifely Needs

Exodus 21:10 says ‘If he take him another wife; her food, her raiment, and her duty of marriage, shall he not diminish.’

This is a conditional statement, saying yes you can marry another woman but don’t forget about your first wife’s food, her clothing and her marriage rights. If you truly believe the Bible is the word of God, then why would he give us instructions for taking another wife if he didn’t intend for men to be polygynous.

As a man with a polygnous nature, you may be lucky enough to get yourself a new lady. She’s new, she might be sexy, have a great personality, beautiful, a great body, as a man you might be so in love and infatuated with her, your dopamine and oxytocin levels are going to be through the roof, you might give her all of your time and attention. This quote is guidance for you to stay on track. It’s saying you can take another wife as long as you don’t forget about your other wife/s, you still have to look after her and have husbandly duties to fill.

Let’s read on …………

7 women to One Man

Isaiah 4:1 And in that day seven women shall take hold of one man, saying, We will eat our own bread, and wear our own apparel: only let us be called by thy name, to take away our reproach.

I made a video about this, ‘Polygyny: Seven women to one man Bible prophecy’ in December 2017. Go check it out if you have time.

It’s a fact that women outnumber men on the planet, but to say that 7 women will take hold of, they will go to the man, that’s pretty deep! This is a prophesy, notice the words, ‘in that day’, it’s saying in the future, there will come a time, when things get so bad, that a woman won’t mind being one of seven wives to a man, just so she can claimed as one of his own, to take away her reproach, meaning disappointment as some women who are unmarried have less class, aren’t respected.

The late great President John Pombe Magafuli of Tanzania, rest in peace, actually pleaded with men to marry multiple women in the country because Tanzania supposedly has 10 million more women than men. Again that’s a lot! The government are even willing to give incentives to men that marry more than one wife. As it’s a ‘developing’ country with low levels of education, the women without husbands are left to fend for themselves and a lot of them turn to prostitution because it’s what they see around them and what they think is the better way for survival. I’ve been there and seen it with my own eyes, trust me when I say it’s no joke!

Head of the Woman

1 Corinthians 11:3 ‘But I would have you know, that the head of every man is Christ; and the head of the woman is the man; and the head of Christ is God.’

Ephesians 5:22 Wives, submit yourselves unto your own husbands, as unto the Lord. 23 For the husband is the head of the wife, even as Christ is the head of the church: and he is the saviour of the body. 24 Therefore as the church is subject unto Christ, so let the wives be to their own husbands in every thing.

Man is the head of the woman, so how can a woman tell a man what to do or how to marry? If a man wants to bring in another wife it’s not for a woman to decide. She is subject to her husband in every thing. A woman’s duty in this instance would be to bring in the best wife for her husband and herself, to advise and (protect her King) when he is involved in courting the other woman, because the wrong woman can throw off the balance in a relationship, and it’s the women who are going to be sister wives, so they need to have a good relationship and understanding for things to work.

In this day and time, women reject polygyny, forcing a man to do things in secret, where he has side chicks, mistresses all over the place, essentially forcing him to become a whoremonger. (You can’t stop a man from cheating) There is open polygyny where the wives know about each other and are in agreement and closed polygyny where things are done in secret, … either way there is still polygyny!

A woman can reject another wife as does the government, which work together to derail a man’s happiness and fruitfulness, but the bible clearly allows it. It’s legal for two men to marry but it’s illegal for a man to marry two or more wives. Which God are you really serving?

Old Testament

Christians often say, yes they acknowledge that polygamy was practiced in the Old Testament and whatever happened then was done away with. They couldn’t be further from the truth. Jesus in his own words, red writing if you need to see said in Matthew 5:17 ‘Think not that I am come to destroy the law, or the prophets: I am not come to destroy, but to fulfil. 18 For verily I say unto you, Till heaven and earth pass, one jot or one tittle shall in no wise pass from the law, till all be fulfilled.’

This law he is speaking about is Moses’ law.

John 7:19 Did not Moses give you the law, and yet none of you keepeth the law? Why go ye about to kill me?

The majority of Christians believe that after they received the New Testament the Old Testament should just be thrown in the bin. They’ll use passages like:

Hebrews 8:13 ‘In that he saith, A new covenant, he hath made the first old. Now that which decayeth and waxeth old is ready to vanish away.’

Galatians 3:24 ‘Wherefore the law was our schoolmaster to bring us unto Christ, that we might be justified by faith. 25 But after that faith is come, we are no longer under a schoolmaster.’

Paul wasn’t an apostle and he tried to change many aspects of the law so how can anyone take him seriously.

Multiplying Wives

Solomon bible quote

Deuteronomy 17:14 ‘Neither shall he multiply wives to himself, that his heart turn not away: neither shall he greatly multiply to himself silver and gold.’

Multiplying here means ‘to store’ or ‘to hoarde.’ Solomon is a perfect example of this as he had had seven hundred wives, and three hundred concubines what we call today ‘side chicks, or mistresses.’ His father David simply added wives which is perfectly acceptable as we’ve seen from the previous quotes, whereas multiplying wives (1000+) is excessive and greedy.

Adultery

Exodus 20:14 ‘Thou shalt not commit adultery.’

Many people are under the assumption that if someone was to have an extra marital affair (I hate the word ‘cheat’ because it implies taking something away from you) then that is considered adultery. However, when we really read the B I B L E we find that to be false. Adultery literally means ‘woman that breaketh wedlock.’ I’ll explain …..

Deuteronomy 22:23 ‘If a damsel that is a virgin be betrothed unto an husband, and a man find her in the city, and lie with her; 24 Then ye shall bring them both out unto the gate of that city, and ye shall stone them with stones that they die; the damsel, because she cried not, being in the city; and the man, because he hath humbled his neighbour’s wife: so thou shalt put away evil from among you.’

The key word here is betrothed, which means engaged to another man, or has agreed, is already committed to marrying another man. If a woman is already betrothed then she can’t have sex with any other man but her fiancé. He didn’t overpower her so there was no need for her to cry out, she was in a city so if she did scream then someone would have heard her and come to her rescue. She wanted it. Therefore, that makes them both guilty, the man for having sex with an engaged woman (note she is already considered a wife) and the woman for breaking wedlock. The punishment here is being stoned to death for breaking a commandment.

Deuteronomy 22:25 ‘But if a man find a betrothed damsel in the field, and the man force her, and lie with her: then the man only that lay with her shall die. 26 But unto the damsel thou shalt do nothing; there is in the damsel no sin worthy of death: for as when a man riseth against his neighbour, and slayeth him, even so is this matter: 27 For he found her in the field, and the betrothed damsel cried, and there was none to save her.’

The woman here in the field cried out, but there was no one to save her, so she is innocent and the man is guilty for raping her.

Deuteronomy 22:28 ‘If a man find a damsel that is a virgin, which is not betrothed, and lay hold on her, and lie with her, and they be found; 29 Then the man that lay with her shall give unto the damsel’s father fifty shekels of silver, and she shall be his wife; because he hath humbled her, he may not put her away all his days.’

Here the woman is not betrothed, she isn’t engaged to another man, so the man can have sex with her, pay her father dowry and take her as his wife. It doesn’t mention anything about him being married already and committing a sin. The sin for the man would be to have sex with a woman who is already engaged or in the process of marrying another man. So the bible is in support of polygyny because a man can take on another wife who is not engaged.

Matthew 19:9 ‘And I say unto you, Whosoever shall put away his wife, except it be for fornication, and shall marry another, committeth adultery: and whoso marrieth her which is put away doth commit adultery.’

If a woman fornicates which would be adultery then a man has a right to divorce her or put her away. ‘Except for’ means this is the only reason a man can divorce her. So if he puts her away for a reason that’s not fornication, and then marries another wife, then he has committed adultery because he caused the first wife to commit adultery (by violating Exodus 21:10, diminishing her rights, and replacing her.

By causing her to ‘break her wedlock contract’ makes him guilty of adultery, and the “second husband” too for participation. The second wife is not guilty of anything. If the first husband didn’t put the first wife away and married the second wife in addition, he wouldn’t have been guilty of adultery.

One Flesh

Genesis 2:24 ‘Therefore shall a man leave his father and his mother, and shall cleave unto his wife: and they shall be one flesh.”

Many people use Gen 2:24 to suggest that this is God’s plan for marriage. Not a chance mate! First of all this was at the dawn of creation, you can hardly use it as an instruction till the end of days! You have to use the bible t o interpret the bible. When a married man, who is “one flesh” with his wife, copulates with another woman, that doesn’t negate his being “one flesh” with the wife. He has an individual marriage with each one of his wives, making several marriages, it’s called polygyny, the natural order of the African family structure.

1 Corinthians 6:16 reveals that a man can be “one flesh” even with a harlot. So if a man can become “one flesh” with a harlot, that proves he can be “one flesh” with more than one woman, without negating his being “one flesh” with his wife.

Verse 17 goes onto say: ‘But he that is joined unto the Lord is one spirit’ As every Christian is joined as “one spirit” with the Lord, then the Lord is the centre point, forming multiple relationships with each of his followers as a poygynous man with his wives. God doesn’t regulate or authorize something which is why he gave us Exodus 21:10 to make sure the first or current wives were still taken care of.

This same ‘one flesh’ quote was written by Moses who was ‘one flesh’ with two wives, Zipporah (Exodus 2:16-21 and 18:1-6) and the Ethiopian woman (Numbers 12:1) so it has no backing. Trying to use Adam & Eve’s marriage as the basis of monogamy means you also support incest because they had many more children other than Cain & Abel, and guess what they had to commit incest to reproduce but this was later changed in Leviticus. God could have created two sets of couples so that incest would not have to occur just as he could have created more wives for Adam.

Moses wrote the first 5 books of the bible

Any attempted argument that is used to oppose polygyny found in the Torah is dead and void, because Moses, (a polygamist, who had the spirit of God, who was above all men) wrote it.

God Gives wives!

2 Samuel 12:8 ‘And I gave thee thy master’s house, and thy master’s wives into thy bosom, and gave thee the house of Israel and of Judah; and if that had been too little, I would moreover have given unto thee such and such things.’

In case you don’t understand this Old English style of writing, this quote says the Lord gave him his master’s wives (plural) and if he wanted more he would have given them to him. How can God give wives if he doesn’t support polygyny?

David already had seven wives. His sin wasn’t in practicing polygyny, it was in taking another man’s wife (Bathsheba, wife of Uriah the Hittite), which is adultery, setting up the death of Uriah the Hittite to try and marry Bathsheba and marrying a Canaanite.

God banned the Israelites from marrying Canaanites in Gen 28:1 because they would turn their hearts away from God.

Lord took it even one step further than that! The LORD God even went on further to say that if David had wanted more wives, the Lord Himself said that He would have given David even more!

Bishops

1 Timothy 3:1 ‘This is a true saying, if a man desire the office of a bishop, he desireth a good work. 2 A bishop then must be blameless, the husband of one wife, vigilant, sober, of good behaviour, given to hospitality, apt to teach;

12 Let the deacons be the husbands of one wife, ruling their children and their own houses well.

This quote is written by Paul, forbidding polygamy by bishops and deacons. Are you a bishop or deacon. If so, then this doesn’t apply to you. In the same light he’s also acknowledging that Christians were actively practicing polygamy. I’ve already told you that Paul wasn’t a true disciple, he tried to change and undermine so many of the original laws, so either way this doesn’t carry much weight.

Conclusion

There is indisputable evidence that the Bible supports polygyny. I’ve given you enough quotes, background story and analysis to say this. By now you should have enough evidence to know the truth regarding this. I’m not here to tell anyone what to do with their life, I’m just teaching the truth, and pointing out your God’s intentions. I’ll be making a follow up to this video which will be fire so look out for the next one coming shortly.
